Effectiveness of selection, parent-offspring correlation and regression in bacterial blight resistance genes introgressed rice segregating population Ciência Rural
Govintharaj,Ponnaiah; Tannidi,Shalini; Swaminathan,Manonmani; Sabariappan,Robin.
ABSTRACT: The effectiveness of early generation selection was practiced in bacterial blight resistance genes introgressed F2 and F2:3 population of the cross CB 174 R × IRBB 60 in rice. F2 Selection have been proved to be robust and effective tool in crop improvement program. Selection differential was positive for all studied traits. Selection response was high for number of grains, thus indicating the effectiveness of selection for these character. Realized heritability was found high for number of grains and thousand grain weight, suggested that direct selection was effective. Expected selection response and predicted genetic gain was high for number of grains. Parent-offspring correlation showed low but significance association for number of productive...

Enhancing resistance to Vibrio aestuarianus in Crassostrea gigas by selection ArchiMer
Dégremont, Lionel; Azéma, Patrick; Maurouard, Elise; Travers, Marie-agnes.
Ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1) and Vibrio aestuarianus are the two main pathogens affecting the production of French oyster (Crassostrea gigas). The absence of genetic correlation between the two diseases is promising for the development of stocks with dual resistance. Using unselected and selected oysters concerning enhanced resistance to OsHV-1 infection, we investigated the first generation of mass selection and the response to selection to increase the resistance to V. aestuarianus for two stocks. For each stock, four groups were produced in June 2013 using either parents unchallenged with the bacteria or counterparts that survived experimental infections by the bacteria. Thus, groups were unselected oysters for both pathogens, selected for either the...

Genetic variation for growth at one and two summers of age in the common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.): Heritability estimates and response to selection ArchiMer
Vandeputte, Marc; Kocour, M; Mauger, S; Rodina, M; Launay, A; Gela, D; Dupont Nivet, M; Hulak, M; Linhart, O.
We estimated the heritability of growth-related traits (weight and length at ages one summer, first spring and two summers) in a synthetic mirror carp strain (HSM) in the Czech Republic. The four generation pedigree was obtained from parentage assignment of three factorial mating designs with microsatellite markers, and included 195 fish without phenotypes (48 G0, 147 G1) and 1321 fish with phenotypes (674 G2, 647 G3). Animal model heritability estimates over generations were in the range 0.21-0.33 for length and in the range 0.31-0.44 for weight. The genetic correlation between length and weight was high (0.97). The correlations between growth measurements in the first and in the second summer of age were moderate to low (0.34-0.67). Divergent selection...

Mass selection for survival and resistance to OsHV-1 infection in Crassostrea gigas spat in field conditions: response to selection after four generations ArchiMer
Degremont, Lionel; Nourry, Max; Maurouard, Elise.
The ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1) is one of the major pathogens affecting the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, and numerous mortality outbreaks have been observed worldwide. We report the first results of our experimental breeding program using mass selection focused on survival and resistance to OsHV-1 after four generations of selection for two lines. These lines originated from two stocks of adult wild oysters sampled from the Marennes-Oléron Bay in 2008. Each line was spawned in February 2009 to produce the base populations. Both lines were then either protected from OsHV-1 or tested in the field in 2009 where they were exposed to OsHV-1. For each line during 2010 to 2013, one generation per year was produced using either the survivors of the...

Response of Productive and Morphovegetative Traits of Globe Artichoke (Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus) to Mass Selection and Estimation of their Heritability Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Martin,Eugenia; Cravero,Vanina; Liberatti,David; Espósito,Andrea; López Anido,Fernando; Cointry,Enrique.
There have been few reports on genetic parameters or artificial selection for growth traits in globe artichoke (Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus), the study of the effect of one cycle of mass selection and realized heritability estimates would be valuable for planning breeding strategies in this species. A C0 segregating population was formed from the cross of two contrasting seed-grown cultivars, Imperial Star and Estrella del Sur FCA. Selected plants for productive traits were intercrossed to produce a C1 population. The C1 population along with the C0 population, both parents and the F1 were evaluated obtaining the response to selection and estimating realized heritability. Mass selection for increased yield and precocity was particularly successful,...

Response to domestication and selection for growth in the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) in separate and mixed tanks ArchiMer
Vandeputte, Marc; Dupont Nivet, M; Haffray, P; Chavanne, H; Cenadelli, S; Parati, K; Vidal, Marie-odile; Vergnet, Alain; Chatain, Beatrice.
Selective breeding of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) receives a growing interest, as the estimated heritability of growth is medium to high. In this study, we compared the offspring of four groups of sea bass sires, mated with the same wild dams: wild (W), first generation of domestication (D), first generation of mass selection for length (M), first generation of PROSPER-like selection for length (P). The comparison was done both in replicated tanks (separate rearing) and in mixed tanks (mixed rearing) where sire origins were recovered by genotyping of eight microsatellite markers. Weight, length and growth rate were measured from day 238 post-fertilization (69 g mean weight) to day 611 post-fertilization (390 g mean weight). Both in mixed and...

Visual selection of Urochloa ruziziensis genotypes for green biomass yield Agronomy
Teixeira, Davi Henrique Lima; Gonçalves, Flávia Maria Avelar; Nunes, José Airton Rodrigues; Souza Sobrinho, Fausto; Benites, Flávio Rodrigo Gandolfi; Dias, Kaio Olímpio das Graças.
The breeding program of Urochloa ruziziensis evaluates many genotypes in initial phases. Evaluations through grades might make the selection less costly. The aim of this study was to verify the efficiency of visual selection for green biomass yield in relation to different selection strategies, such as mass selection by phenotypic mean, BLUP (Best Linear Unbiased Prediction) and at random. For this purpose, 2,309 regular genotypes were evaluated in an augmented block design in two cuts. The evaluators gave grades for plant vigor, and later, the plots were measured for green biomass yield. The coincidences of the selected genotypes were estimated by different selection strategies. Then, 254 clones of the genotypes selected in different strategies were...
